Title: "What a Catch" 

For several months, I tracked this elusive Reef heron (Matuku moana) through the ever-changing tides and moods of Aotea Harbour. Countless early mornings were spent lying motionless in the wet sand, soaked through, waiting with camera in hand. The heron always kept its distance, watchful, quiet, impossibly graceful.

Then finally, on this day the heron wandered down to the water’s edge. I held my breath as it paused, eyes locked on the surface, every movement deliberate. In one lightning-fast strike, it plunged its beak into the water and surfaced with a stunning catch, an incredible display of instinct and precision.

This image captures that fleeting moment of success. A reward not just for the bird, but for the many hours of quiet waiting.
