You'll immerse yourself in the vibrant coastal ecosystems of Hawkes Bay across two rewarding days, from elegant Royal Spoonbills gliding through tidal estuaries to rare dotterels and seasonal visitors along windswept shorelines.
In a small, relaxed group setting, you'll learn practical skills for getting close to birds, reading their movements, and making the most of natural light. All in some of Hawkes Bay's most spectacular coastal locations.

Day One - Wetlands & Estuaries
We begin in the region’s productive wetlands and tidal estuaries, focusing on the elegant Royal Spoonbill (Kōtuku ngutupapa) as they feed and move through the shallows in beautiful natural light.
Throughout the day we’ll also photograph:
Pied Stilt (Poaka)
New Zealand Dotterel (Tūturiwhatu)
Shoveler ducks, cormorants, brown teal and more
Photography Focus:
Field craft and ethical approach techniques
Reading shorebird behaviour
Composition and clean backgrounds
Creating soft bokeh in natural light
Day Two - Coastline & Streams
We explore beaches, and coastal lagoons prime habitats for shorebirds and seasonal visitors. With changing tides and light, we adapt our locations to maximise photographic opportunity.
Expect practical, hands-on guidance tailored to your skill level, whether you're building foundations or refining advanced wildlife techniques.
Accommodation
Our Napier base is Kennedy Park Holiday Park, a relaxed and comfortable stay just minutes from the coast. With tidy cabins and excellent facilities, it’s the perfect place to unwind, review images, and connect with fellow photographers after each day in the field.
